Membership Committee Operating Code

Operating Code for the Standing Committee on Membership

Name of the Committee: Membership

Purpose of the Committee

The Membership Committee is a standing committee of the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) and is responsible for: a) the oversight of recruitment and renewal of academic departments related to kinesiology, and b) development of recruitment and promotional materials.

Committee Membership

The Membership Committee consists of 3-5 members, including the chair of the committee. The chair of the committee must be a member of the AKA Board of Directors. Remaining members of the committee must be faculty members in AKA member departments.

The Executive Committee seeks nominations for committee members from the AKA Board of Directors and current members of the Membership Committee on an annual basis.

All members of the committee are appointed by the AKA Executive Committee for two-year terms, which are staggered so that approximately half of the committee membership is changed each year. Terms begin and end after the annual workshop. A committee member can be reappointed for a second term on committee. The Executive Committee should attempt to form a diverse Membership Committee in terms of the types of institutions and size of departments represented on the committee.

Consistent with Article 12 of the American Kinesiology Association by-laws, committee members shall disclose any conflict of interest with any issues or meeting agenda items at the beginning of a committee meeting. When a conflict exists, the member will abstain from voting and participating in the discussion. The minutes of the meeting shall reflect the disclosure made.

Responsibilities

• Works collaboratively with the AKA Executive Committee and Business Manager to maintain current lists of member departments and departments that have not renewed their membership.
• Works collaboratively with the AKA Executive Director and Executive Committee to develop and implement: a) recruitment and promotional materials, b) strategies for recruiting new member departments, and c) strategies for retaining current member departments.
• Holds a conference call at least once per quarter to conduct business of the committee and pursue formal and/or informal goals established by the committee.
• Monitors and submits AKA web content recommended changes specific to the committee to the Communications Committee
